The photographs in this section are mainly vistas with good fishing streams located somewhere in the forest. Why scenes?

Because a fly rod needs to be used.  These are good places, both for the fly fisher, and a family vacation.  Also, they are the places with strong fly angling histories.

Upper Metolius basin.  Camp Sherman, location of the fly fair is near the rancher’s meadow.  Black Butte and the resort is in the the near background.  One of the Three Sisters {mountains} is in the distance.

S -Lower Metolius 5x3 Color

The middle reach of the Metolius looking NNE.  In the background is Green Ridge. Green Ridge catches the cold air descending off the mountains in the evening.  Most first time campers are surprised by the hot days and cold nights on the Metolius.

This photograph was taken near sunrise, so the cold water of the Metolius is “steaming” in the colder air coming off the mountains.  At the far butte, the river makes a sharp turn to the east and shortly enters the Deschutes River.

The photograph is from the top of the cinder cone just north of Canyon Creek campground and trail head.  To your left and far away is Mt. Jefferson. Behind you is Three Finger Jack. An immense amount of the area to the west was destroyed by fire in 2005.

A drive, and the short walk to the top of the cinder butte should be a must to Metolius visitors.

Over the last seven years, your writer has spent a goodly amount of time in the Metolius basin at the fairs, and for enjoyment.  Both photographs gray scale in book.

Metolius springs

Springs of the Metolius near Canyon Creek campground.  The roughly 2 1/2 mile hike from Canyon Creek campground to the fish hatchery {~5 miles total}, is well worth the effort.  Not in book.
